Overview

The main aim of an Life cycle assessment (LCA) course is to educate postgraduate students or industrial experts about the principles and applications of Life Cycle Assessment, enabling them to assess and make informed decisions regarding the environmental impacts of products, processes, and services across various industries. The course aims to provide participants with a fundamental understanding of the key concepts and principles of LCA, including the life cycle stages, environmental impact categories, and system boundaries. Participants are expected to gain proficiency in conducting LCA studies, which includes defining goals and scope, collecting data, performing impact assessments, and interpreting results.

Programme structure

The test course will start on October 14, 2024, and will last for four weeks. During the first week, students will engage in self-study using lecture materials provided in Moodle. The second and third weeks will focus on online seminars, where students will learn how to use the LCA software and complete a simplified calculation example. In our course, we will use OpenLCA software with Ecoinvent databases. In the final week, students who would like to receive a certificate and, get access to the summer school in Riga in September 2025 must complete an online test in Moodle.
